November 17, 1998

The following is the announcement from the November meeting:

In a nutshell... The next meeting will be held at the Offices of HCIA in Ann Arbor (Domino's Farms). The meeting will be hosted by MIUG board member, Mike Reed, who will give a presentation on data warehousing in a large scale environment. We will also have a presentation by Red Brick Systems on their Data Warehousing technology. As you may have heard, Red Brick is in the process of being purchased by Informix. This presentation will give us a preview of some of the new technology that will be offered by Informix in the future.

The Topics...This meeting's topics include:

Large Scale Data Warehousing Basics- Our own Mike Reed (MIUG Board Member and MIS Manager at HCIA) will provide us with a presentation on HCIA's IT organization. Mike's presentation will be an overview of the HCIA corporate date warehouse, environment, and history. This will provide many insights into data warehousing since HCIA is one of Informix's largest customers.

Red Brick Systems - Most traditional data warehouse applications have three stress points that dictate success. These are data loads, query response time, and scalabilty (users and data). Since Red Brick was designed for data warehousing, it had the advantage of solving these problems without being concerned with how it impacts OLTP. Red Brick will present how their technology address each of these stress point and their most recent products and features.

Come early at 6:00 PM and enjoy our Pizza and Soda. Its a good time to do some serious "networking" with your fellow Informix users, before our program begins at 6:30. See you there!!

The following is the meeting announcement from the September meeting:

In a nutshell... HP will discuss high speed computing for 1999 and beyond. Informix is proud to provide a peak into the future for application development by demonstrating the new Dynamic-4GL product as well as Visionary. Informix representatives will be available to discuss Informix and answer any questions you have.

The Topics... This meeting's topics include:

  • High speed computing... HP will describe the future of high speed computing via fiber and other new technologies.

  • Informix Dynamic 4GL... D4GL enables existing Informix-4GL applications to be recompiled and deployed in a variety of graphical user interface (GUI) environments. Recompiling your existing Informix-4GL text-based application with Informix Dynamic 4GL will allow it to run in a "thin" client/server system. The single executable and source will simultaneously support ASCII terminals, the X Window System (X11), and Microsoft Windows (3.11, 95, and NT) on the same network.

  • Informix Visionary... The first of a new generation of information access tools for the Visual Business Intelligence arena. It provides a GUI that enables programmers, analysts, knowledge workers, and domain experts to visualize, navigate, and manipulate data without programming or traditional application development cycles. It truly unique in the industry and is a product of CTO Mike Stonebraker's technology office.

  • /etc... We are pleased to announce that the MIUG has filled its remaining board positions. We welcome Stefanie Vario from ZenaComp and Sundar Ramanathan from Compuware and appreciate their commitment to the MIUG. Thank you again to Informix, who has committed to providing at least one representative at each MIUG meeting (if at all possible). Up-to-the minute info at www.miug.com.
